The Town of
Richlands is situated in the western part of Tazewell
County, Virginia. Tazewell County is located in the
southwest part of the state bordering Buchanan County to the
northwest, Russell County to the southwest, Smyth County to
the south, Bland County to the east and West Virginia to the
north. Richlands is a
town of 4,144 as of the 2000 U. S. Census. According
to the same census figures, the population of Tazewell
County is 44,598.
There were 18,277 households
out of which 28.70% had children under the age of 18 living
with them, 58.20% were married couples living together,
10.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and
27.60% were non-families. 25.20% of all households were made
up of individuals and 11.90% had someone living alone who
was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was
2.40 and the average family size was 2.85.
In the county, the population was spread out with 21.40%
under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to
44, 27.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who were 65 years of
age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100
females there were 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18
and over, there were 88.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $27,304,
and the median income for a family was $33,732. Males had a
median income of $28,780 versus $19,648 for females. The per
capita income for the county was $15,282. About 11.70% of
families and 15.30% of the population were below the poverty
line, including 20.30% of those under age 18 and 13.90% of
those age 65 or over.
